What are Porcelain Veneers?

Veneers are very thin pieces of durable, tooth shaped porcelain that are custom made (for shape and color) by a professional dental laboratory. They are bonded onto the front of teeth to create a beautiful and attractive smile. Veneers can completely reshape your teeth and smile. As with most dental restorations, veneers are not permanent and may someday need replacement. They are very durable and will last many years, giving you a beautiful long lasting smile.

Why get Porcelain Veneers?

Veneers can often be an alternative to crowns and for many an ideal solution in treating many dental conditions. Patients often get veneers to create a uniform, white and beautiful smile. They can correct crooked teeth, fix severely discolored or stained teeth or replace teeth that are too small or large. They can also close unwanted or uneven spaces and replace worn or chipped teeth.

What does the Treatment Involve?

Getting veneers usually requires two visits to complete the process. The teeth are prepared by buffing and shaping the surface to allow for the thickness of the veneer. A mold or impression of the teeth is taken and a shade (color) will then be chosen by you and your dentist. Your second visit involves cleansing your teeth with special liquids to achieve a durable bond. Bonding cement is then placed between the tooth and veneer and a special light beam is used to harden and set the bond.

What happens after treatment?
You will receive care instructions for veneers. You will need to do proper brushing, flossing and regular dental visits to help extend the life of your new veneers.

What are “PJC” Porcelain Jackets?

A PJC is an all-ceramic crown (full coverage), which are fabricated entirely out of a glass-like compound. The most popular reason for using a Porcelain Jacket is that is looks similar to a porcelain veneer. Patients often choose the Porcelain Jacket becausethey need a stronger and more durable option for cosmetic services.

The reasons for placement and procedure for a PJC are virtually the same to that of the traditional veneer. However, in some cases more of the original tooth structure may have to be removed to eliminate a thick or bulky finished product.
